Onion Tambli (Kande tamboli/tambli)
This is ‘the most wanted recipe’ of aayisrecipes, because many people had asked me to post this. For no reason I kept it on hold till now. Finally today I thought its the time to post it.

Now let me write something about this dish. This can be either prepared with spring onion or the normal onion. When I was a kid my aayi prepared this with spring onion, which I loved to grow in our garden. Since raw onion is used, this dish is not for those who do not prefer eating raw onion(like me!!). This dish has hardly 2-3 steps, so I can say this is one of the easy-to-do dishes.
Ingredients:
Onion or spring onion (chopped) 1/2 cup
Coconut 3/4 cup
Tamarind extract 1/2 tea spn
Red chillies 4-5
Salt
Method:
Grind together coconut, tamarind and red chillies to a very smooth paste, adding sufficient water.
Mix salt and onions with hand. Add these onions to ground masala and mix well.
Serve with rice. (This gravy is not cooked. So keep it refrigerated. Remove from refrigerator 1/2 an hour before serving).

ginger and onions(alle-piyava) tambali is delicious

May 7th, 2006 at 1:58 pmThe recipe is the same.Mix salt onion and finely cut ginger by hand and add this to the ground masala.This tambali goes very well with rice and fried fish.This recipe is from mangalore.

Likewise you can make Tendli Panna Tambli, Shirali salli (Ridge Gourd skin) Tambli, Padwalla biya (seeds of the Snake Gourd) Tambli. However, for the last 3 tamblis we fry hing, jeera and green chilles and fry with the coconut\tamarind. The tendli paan are boiled and ground along with the coconut. I love this dish…but from what I recall, the ladies in my family boiled it to cook the onion, tasted delicious nevertheless!

But as far as I remember my mom used to put buttermilk (majjige) in Tambli recipe ….I’m not sure, will check with her.
Shilpa: Latha, there are few tamblis where buttermilk is not added. This is one of those.

July 13th, 2008 at 10:52 ami am new to cooking and have a goal of learning amchigeele dishes this year,…just curious..no masala is required?, the coriander, cumin, garam masala etc.. of the world?
Also, what kind of grinder you use?…i have a blender thats typically used to prepare drinks…i used that one..but the consistency was not as nice and the coconut was a bit crunchy..
Finally, Huge thanks shilpa! – reminds me of my grandma everytime i try these recipes.

Shilpa: I have Sumeet mixer. I had used blender before buying this mixer, but yes, the blender does not make it so fine.
