  • Vali bhajji ambat - vali bhajji or malabar spinach is one of the most loved greens in my hometown. Everyone has this growing in their backyard or vendors bring it to sell on the doorstep. When we were kids, my parents had it growing in our backyard but now they just buy it. The vendor ladies bring it in neatly made bundles like in the next picture. This spinach is cooked in many ways, one of our favorites is with vadis. The homemade ashgourd vadis take it to whole new level. Aayi made this ambat recently and sent the picture. I can taste/smell it from the picture ❤️. The ambat goes great with rice or served with paej(rice congee) as a sidedish. #aayisrecipes #konkani #konkanifood #konkanirecipe #vadi #odi #ashgourdvadi #malabarspinach #valibhajji #ambat #comfortfood #northkanarafood #gsb #kumta #foodfood #foodblogger #foodstagram
  • Pav bhaji - simple enough to make it easily, fancy enough to make for parties, healthy enough to eat at any time. My kids love it any time. #instantpot makes it so easy to prepare this. My little one asked for this for his big day. He was very happy to eat it with some extra butter.

  • Hope you all had a happy holi. For us it was a normal work- school day. I made a matar/greenpeas(and a little carrots) pulav and cucumber-tomato raita. Pulav came together quickly in #instantpot. Served this with garlic dal sent by my friend Maya(every day I am thankful for her) and my lemon pickle. #aayisrecipes #pulav #pilaf #greenpeas #peas #simplepulav #lunchboxitem #basmatirice #raita #foodfood #foodblogger #foodstagram
  • A comforting vegetarian thali - there hasn’t been much cooking going on in my kitchen. But I miss creating a healthy meal for my family, so I try my best. The kids help too, which is a blessing. This comfort vegetarian thali was enjoyed last week.
Tendli /ivy gourd upkari - I added a little crushed peanuts in the seasoning and added a lot of coconut. It was amazing. Curry leaves chutney- V picked up some extra curry leaves, so that went into this huge batch of chutney. It adds the extra oomph to any meal. The saru was sent over by my friend M. She has fed us so much last few days, I am grateful for her generosity.

  • Seafood heaven - my aayi is amazing hostess. When she has guests, she loves to make these huge spreads of delicious food. Recently when her brother and sister visited her, she went all the way in. Everyone being huge seafood fans, she made this delicious thali for them. Crab gravy (kurle ambat) - since they live on coast, they get fresh crabs. It is one of the most loved seafood among many in my family. Her crab gravy is to die for, so she made this. Bangda fry - she told me she wanted some fish and she wasn’t finding any. But on the day they came, I think she was finally able to find #meckerel and she made fry. Clams Vada(Khubbe vade) - some of the fishermen women (is that the right description??) bring home freshly caught clams. They are so delicious. Her signature dish with it is vade. It is simply to die for. Fresh kokum kadi - it is kokum season now, so kadi is on the menu most of the days. This spicy- sweet kadi is the best for summer. Clams gravy (khubbe ambat) - another classic from her kitty. It is honestly hard to write about this without feeling homesick. Especially now, I could give anything for her food.

  • Banana cake - had 3 bananas that were dying and had to be used quickly. So both the kids came to rescue to make this delicious cake. It was good to have something for their snacks during day. They used the recipe for banana cake with wheat and honey from my blog. Doubled the recipe, used sugar instead of honey and also added an egg. They used the #multigrainatta. It was the most amazing banana cake. I helped with oven but they did everything else. #aayisrecipes #cake #banana #bananacake #atta #snacksforkids #kidsbaking #baking #kidsinkitchen #foodfood #foodstagram #foodblogger
  • Potato-bellpepper bhaji- I usually load up bellpepper (capsicum) in this and add little potatoes. But this time the potato was the star. I used yellow bell pepper which is very mild compared to green one. It worked so well on my potato loving family. I just added cumin, a small cinnamon piece, few cloves to oil. Then added loads of potatoes, bellpepper, chilli powder, turmeric, salt. Covered and cooked on a very low flame. It was a simple delicious side with rice and a dal. Menthe hittu and aayi’s pickle to complete the meal.

  • A simple heavenly comfort food thali from my aayi - I asked her to send me some pictures, so here is the first one(after a while) that she sent today. Sungta upkari - this is her signature, amazingly tasty prawns sidedish prepared with tiny prawns available in my hometown. The smaller the prawns, the better is the taste. As far as I can remember, this has been favorite of every guest we had at home. It has a heady aroma of coriander leaves and just brightens up the entire meal. Masoori ambat - a gravy with whole masoor cooked in a coconut masala. Fried onions at the end give a very unique taste to this humble ambat. Then the usual rice, Ashgourd vadi(kuvale odi), buttermilk chillies(taka mirsang) and homemade curds. I could really give anything for this thali now!.

  • The muga moLe randayi (green moong sidedish) must be one of the most loved Konkani dishes, right after Dalithoy, in my part of the world. This is part of any functions, festivals and remembrance meals. The aroma of this cooking along with dalithoy and rice, brings festive memories for many of us. During the big function meals, a huge batch of moong is sprouted and washed till all the skin is removed to make this amazing dish. When I make here, I leave the skin on for extra fiber. Unlike some Konkani homes where this is only made during remembrance meals, this is center part of any big meals for us. I have so many memories associated with this and when my aayi makes this for us, I feel I am in heaven. Check out my new YouTube video of Muga MoLe Randayi.
