Lovely one..My uncle always would prepare this.He would add a lil bit of putani(hurgadle) to this..
My all time fav… i used to eat in mid night too… but after i came to Aus , i m not getting Udupi’s tasty churmuri… i also add fried peanuts
I too make this very often but with a little variation. I dont add tomatoes as the puffed rice becomes soft very soon. So i add grated carrots a little bit and also sambar powder instead of just chilli powder. This gives extra taste to it. But however its prepared this masala puffed rice looks great and i love them more than bhel.
Makes me nostalgic when mom used to make such “Mudhi” as we call it in Odia..
Love your version and we add green chillies for the spice and a tinge of mustard oil that gives a special aroma to the “Masala Mudhi”
Thanks for sharing!
Wow – I am with you! Glad to find another Odiya blogged!
Mustard oil gives a very good flavour
My mom used to make this and we totally loved it. I do not get the puffed rice often, but I do the same thing with cooked beans like garbanzo, etc.

The dry churmuri seasoned puffed rice is what is available in our home all through the year. I season puffed rice with chilli , garlic and hing and add salt to taste. Curry leaves and ground nut roasted and added for taste.
Till I read Jagruti’s comment, was feeling it looks familiar – we call it Jhalmudi! Nice to know another name for puffed rice – it’s a favorite with the particular region of Odisha that I belong to – Mayurbhanj!
This reminds me my childhood. I used to eat this coming home after school with my friends.
