Dry Chicken

I do not eat chicken or mutton dishes. But since my husband and children like chicken, I cook it at home occasionally. My sister gave me this recipe. She makes this dish with mutton, but as we don’t cook or eat mutton at home, I prepared it with chicken. It came out really well and all liked it. Since then am making this everytime I cook chicken at home. This goes well as a side dish with chapati/rice. It can also be served as a starter.
Ingredients:
1/2 kg (1 lb approx) Chicken pieces
1 cup chopped onion
2 tea spn coriander seeds
5 cloves
3″ cinnamon
4 tea spn poppy seeds (khus khus)
2 tea spns ginger garlic paste
3 tbl spns red chilly powder
1/4 tbl spn turmeric powder
1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
Oil
Salt
Method:
Heat oil in a pan and fry onion pieces till they turn translucent. Add chicken pieces and salt. Sprinkle some water over this. Close the pan and cook till the chicken is done. Add ginger garlic paste. Powder the coriander seeds, cloves, cinnamon and poppy seeds and add to already boiled chicken. Add chilly powder and turmeric powder to it and mix well. Add finelly chopped coriander leaves and continue heating for two more minutes. Serve with chapatis or a side dish with rice or as a starter.
Serves : 3-4
Preparation time : 20mins

hi shilpa
very good receips il looks tasty & easy to try
Wouldn’t it taste better if the masala was fried first and then the chicken was added? The flavour of the masalas would then have longer time to seep into the chicken.
That looks really delicious! Nice to have a chicken starter.

Roshni, you can leave it out and try with remaining ingredients.

Hey Shilpa,
This recipe looks extremely delicious and I cannot wait to try it out. But I have never cooked chicken before and would like to know if you have any tips for safe handling of chicken or if they are mentioned elsewhere in your blog. Also, it might be a trivial question, but how do you know when the chicken is done?
Thanks a lot!
Swetha
hi shilpa,
tnx for an awwesum cooking.. its vry tempting and an easy receipe. first as i say the chicken in the photo i thought it would a similar receipe lyk buriyani. bt pretty gud kids would love it. once again tnx
amu
@Natasha:yes i think u r right.. u should add masalas before adding chicken to onions. this tastes better than the as mentioned above. And no need of adding water too… bcoz chicken leaves the oil and it tastes better when chicken is cooked in its oil and masalas.
@Nazia, Poppy seeds add thickness to the gravy. You can substitute poppy seeds with almond or cashew powder.
Shilpa, tried this recipe today & it’s come out really yummy…I have tried several recipes from this site & they have all come out well, thank you so much…
yes i agree to nataasha and shreya. tried it today and its yum. khas-khas plays the magic i believe.
