Grilled Pomfret

As we like fish very much, we try to get as frequently as we can, though most of the weeks that gets confined to Sundays. We hardly find fish of indian variety here. Though we find Pomfret at Indian stores, it will be frrozen one and not fresh from sea. However for the sake of taste buds, I take this, as an acceptable compromise.
There are couple of varieties of preparation, I like to try frequently. Grilled fish is one of them. Among different types, Salmon is one which I tried many times and it has come out perfect.
Ingredients:
1 pomfret (clean and put some deep slits on both sides)
1 tea spn chilli powder
A pinch turmeric
1/2 tea spn garlic
1 tea spn ginger
1/2 tea spn garam masala
1/4 tea spn coriander powder
1/4 tea spn cumin powder
5-6 curry leaves
Lemon juice(about 2 tbl spns)
Salt
Method:
Mix all spice powders, ginger garlic, salt. Add lemon juice to make a paste. Cut the curry leaves into two and add this to the paste(do not make a paste of curry leaves). Apply this to the fish.
Keep it aside atleast for 1hr.
Heat the grill pan and grill the fish till it is cooked.
Serve hot.
Serves : 1-2
Preparation time : 20mins

sllllrrrp…..
incomplete recipe. should mention the temp and time for grilling.
great recipe….. picture perfect…. i loved the ingredients.. simple and easy…
just one querry…. it is understood that fish should not be marinated for long…. is 1 hr reqd……do let me know… thank u
shilpa: I searched about marinating fish after reading your comment. We do marinate fish for longer times. I have seen at my native, we sometimes apply all spices to fish and then refrigerate it in the morning for lunch and remaining left over fish pieces are used for dinner. They are always more tasty than the fish marinated for less time. (I am not sure if this fact holds good for Catfish and other delicate fish). But pomfret and other indian fishes, marinating definitely helps build up flavor. I may be wrong, but thats what I follow and never had any issue so far.
Hey SHilpa,
Looks delicious and perfect…. very very tempting
hi shilpa…..
can u pls clear my doubt ….what do u call soya bean in konkani?
tori or tingalavre?
Shilpa: Sorry, donno. Both these words are not used in North Kanara.
Shilpa, You are the best cook I hv come accross..I hv tried many of your dishes. Many of them have come out very very well.
Can you please post the recipe of Dark Choclate Cake .. I am searching few recipes but unable to find any. I stay in India . Whenever I add Cadbury coco powder, the cake looks light brown in color. Is there a way i can make it dark brown.
Also can u provide me the recipe ok baking cake in pressure cooker. Can I add Dark Chocolate instead. I hv failed many many times baking a cake. I hv given up almost.
Shilpa: I have never baked a cake in pressure cooker, so I don’t know much about that. Please check the cake recipes on this blog for chocolate cakes.
Hi Shilpa,
This recipe is picture perfect and I completely agree with you on period of marinating fish. I too haven’t faced any problem either in marinating it for about an hour, not sure if it can be left overnight.
Great recipe….Thanks
there is no doubt that this recipe is wonderful and classic but if you ask me i wud like to add ajwain in masala paste and to coat the masala i wud love to add rasted to gram flour. otherwise everything is perfect. thanks

Grilled fish, perfect for summers!
Do you have any Asian Food market or Hong Kong market in your area????? try them for Fish…..We get excellent pomfret, shrimp and many versions of Indian fish from the Hong Kong market in East Brunswick… NJ where we stay
Shilpa: Yes we do, but the fish is not very fresh there. We used to buy fish from there before but after a while we stopped buying from there.
Hi Shilpa,
This recipe looks healthy and delicious. My question is that sometimes I have access to salmon much more than pomfret so should I use the same ingredients to grill salmon? Thank you

So I have a newbie question. How do I clean fish? My parents are from south canara, and I did not particularly pay attention while my Mom cooked. I love to cook now, and like to think that I am pretty good, but I don’t know how to clean fresh fish! Please?
