Moong dal amti

The new year started with a new job for me. Two weeks into the job, and I feel very tired by the time I reach home. Here timing is not very flexible like my old job. I am still trying to get adjusted to it, but the extreme cold weather these days is not helping much. No matter how much busy I am, over the years, I have always given preference to home cooked food. I am not a great fan of cooking in advance. So I cook something that gets ready in 15-20mins max. With some modifications here and there, I have cooked some tasty dishes in last couple of days.
My pachi makes something similar to this with moong dal. I clearly remember the taste and aroma, but I don’t know her recipe. I tried this and it was too good. Brought back my college days. Day by day, I have become great fan of goda masala.
Ingredients:
1 cup moong dal
1/2 cup onion
1/2 tea spn garlic
1/2 tea spn chilli powder
1 tea spn goda masala
3-4 strands coriander leaves
1/2 tea spn tamarind extract/amchoor powder
Oil
Salt
Method:
Wash moong dal and soak in water for 10mins.
Heat oil and add onion, garlic. Fry for few minutes. Add moong dal, chilli powder, tamarind/amchoor, goda masala and fry for 3-4 minutes. Cook till dal is done. (You can cook it in pressure cooker)
Garnish with coriander leaves.
Add water, salt and cook.
Serves : 3-4
Preparation time : 20mins
Congrats on your new job Shilpa..This amti looks so delicious, I could slurp it down like soup..
Congrats on ur job. did you use yellow moong dal or green one? looks very yummy and ideal with rice for your lucnch box.
Shilpa: Yellow moong dal.
Hello shilpa,
The dal looks great. can i use ’salachi moog dal’ (moog dal with its green skin intact). or any other dal like masoor or arhar?
thanks in advance.
Madhu
Shilpa: I haven’t tried with other dals. BUt I think they should work.
Thts a lovely simple dal.Btw is the Goda masala or the fried onion, a reason for this lovely colour of dal,coz as i can figure out there aren’t any tomatoes in it
The other day i saw a Goda masala pack in one of the mall, but was not sure how usefully will i be able to consume that,so didn’t bought any.Do u have a specific brand preference or u make it at home?
Shilpa: Its from chilli powder and goda masala Alka. I make the masala at home.
Hi shilpa…love ur site.
thanx for the wonderful recipes.
the amti looks good…but doesn’t using moong dal make the amti ’s texture a little glueish?
and when should i add the tamarind?
pls clarify!
Shilpa: No. If you fry it well, it does not become glueish. I have updated the post for tamarind.
This is a fav with me,i can have it everyday, but have not tried it with goda masala, after ur rave reviews, guess will have to try it out soon…
Yummy dal! Linda made one similar too today. Enjoy the weekend Shilpa. It’s freezing here today. Hope it’s not that bad there!
)
congrats on ur new job shilpa, this looks delicious, we use sambar powder and make masiyal similar to this, but his one with goda masala looks different, let me first try the masala powder from ur receipe. Pl post a few more amtis
I hope your new job works well for you! I’ve seen this amti made with chana and toovar, but this is the first time with moong. I love moong- one of my faves! Could I add a little gur?
BTW, looks like the ultra cold spell is leaving today for a bit; it gets better from here, so hang in there!
Shilpa: Actually, the traditional chana dal version from my pachi is coming up
. I think jaggery will give a nice sweet twist to this amti (V does not prefer sweetish dals, so I keep it spicy all the time).
(
Well, I hope you are right. I will be the happiest person if the cold spell leaves. We had extreme cold for last 2 days. Too much snow too
All the best in your new job, Shilpa! I m sure u will adjust soon..the moong daal looks slurpingly delicious! I make just daal tadka with moong daal..now shall try out your recipe! Tks for sharing (when u speak wt ur pacchi next, do take her version too
greedy readers like me tch tch
Have a great weekend!)
Hi Shilpa,
Whether galic is chopped one or grind? Also in the picture its look like that you have used tomatos which is not covered in ingradients.
Shilpa: You can chop or grind, does not make any difference. I did not add tomatoes, but u can add them if you want
Good Luck with the new Job!!!
I hear u on home cooked meals despite the rigid timing… i like that too!
Amti- bhaat my fav combo !!YUM!!
Shilpa: Probably that will change soon Manasi, thats why I am posting more on weekend when I have some time
Thats sounding so good shilpa…congrats on your new job..I can understand how hard it must be!…
This tasted different from any daal version I have made, used Aamchur for the first time in Daal..was yummy n hubby a not so very daal person also had more helpings. Tks for this keeper n easyyyy recipe!
Wow, this looks wonderful. I haven’t cooked a good curry for ages – I have not been cooking much at all this summer. I can almost smell your dal from here.
I tried this amti
and it was yummy.
I too have become a fan of ghoda masala. Thanks shilpa
I love your site. I remember eating this with sprouted moong dal in B’bay and Pune as well. Goda is the king of spices that can make anyhtign taste good! I sometimes add it to zucchini with some coconut and even zucchini shines!
This is served with bata vada too in some places…was it called ‘matki’ there ?
