Green peas upma/uppittu

Green peas were not very common at our native before. Now a days we get them during the peas season. Whenever we got them, mom used to make some mouth watering dishes like kurma, pulav and this upma. When green peas were not available, she made this upma with only onion and rava(sooji). Both the versions are too delicious. Green peas give a unique taste to this upma. I prepared this with frozen peas available here.
Until recently I didn’t know onion would make so much difference in taste. Just try both the versions.
Ingredients:
Sooji(wheat rava) 1 cup
Onion 1/2 cup
Green peas 1/4 cup
Mustard seeds 1/2 tea spn
Urad daal(optional) 1/2 tea spn
Asafoetida a pinch
Oil/ghee 2 tea spns
Sugar 1/2 tea spn
Green chillies 2-3
Curry leaves 4-5
Coconut 1 tbl spn
Coriander leaves 2-3 strands
Salt
Method:
Heat oil and add mustard, urad daal(optional). When mustard starts popping and urad daal turns slightly brownish, add curry leaves(cut the leaves into two to enhance the aroma). Add asafoetida and green chillies. Add onion and fry till onions turn transparent. Add green peas and fry for 4-5 minutes.
Now add sooji(rava) and fry on a low flame for around 6-7mins (take care not to burn the rava). Rava could be fried seperately and added instead of frying it in peas mixture.
Add salt and sugar, mix well.
In a seperate bowl heat 2 cups of water. When it starts boiling, transfer it to the rava mixture. Cover and cook till all water is absorbed. Mix well. Add coconut.
Garnish with coriander leaves.
Serve hot with or without sev.
Serves : 2
Preparation time : 10mins

Nice one. I use peas, carrots, tomatoes and onions. The colour of this upma is yellow as turmeric is used. Process is the same. The vegetable i.e. carrots and peas are mixed in the water which is boiled and when the water is added to upma the vegetables are cooked. You can also cut beans fine and add them. My kids love this as it looks colourful. It is garnished with coriander leaves and grated coconut. I guess this one will be your next posting as you are on “UPMA SPECIAL”

Great recipe! I left out the coconut and the sugar and added a little extra peas, and it turned out really good.
your recipe is quite good bt i want to ask everytime i make it ,it becomes very sticky.while eating it sticks to fingers.and moreove also to pan.can u tell where the problem lies.
Shilpa: It looks like the rava/sooji was not roasted properly. Try roasting it before you use it in upma.
Looks lovely – a very simple upma recipe. If I use peas, I usually also use carrots too, or some other orange veg like sweet potato. Makes it colourful! Please see pictures of me making upma on my blog: http://mangosoup.blogspot.com/2009/08/semolina-upma.html
Hello,
The upma turned out great. one quick tip for novice.. While you stir the upma, it should come like a nice ball then you can turn off the stove. If it does not, then you might have to add some oil.
shilpa, today evening snacks i tried this upma.
it is delicious. Thanks a lot. Your recipes are excellent.
While making akki tahri upittu, just before taking it off the stove, add Ghee and stir well. This removes the stickiness and makes it aromatic.
You can also coarsly grind a large quantity of rice like rawa. Prepare seasoning in Til oil and pour it on to the rice rawa. I dry green chiilies in the oven and add to the oil, taking care not to burn it.
This mixture can be stored for a long time and used to make instant rice upma/ upittu.
